The Seven Summits

The Seven Summits idea groups the highest mountain on each continent, but the list depends on how a climber defines Europe and Oceania. This page explains the commonly used version and the main alternative rather than presenting one convention as a physical law.

Why there is more than one Seven Summits list

Most modern Seven Summits lists use Mount Elbrus for Europe and either Puncak Jaya, also called Carstensz Pyramid, or Mount Kosciuszko for the Australia/Oceania slot. The difference comes from geographic convention. A list based on the Australian continent can use Kosciuszko, while a list based on the broader Oceania region uses Puncak Jaya. Mount Everest

High-altitude expedition climbing. South Col and North Col routes are major expedition lines requiring extensive acclimatization, glacier travel and high-altitude support.

Aconcagua

6,961 m · South America

High-altitude expedition trekking and mountaineering. The Normal Route is non-technical in typical dry conditions but involves prolonged high altitude, loose terrain, cold and strong wind.

Denali

6,190 m · North America

High-altitude expedition mountaineering. The West Buttress is the most used route and involves heavily loaded glacier travel, crevasse management, steep snow and sustained cold.

Mount Kilimanjaro

5,895 m · Africa

High-altitude trekking. Multiple trekking routes reach the crater rim; the main challenge is rapid altitude gain rather than technical climbing.

Mount Elbrus

5,642 m · Europe

High-altitude glacier mountaineering. The standard south-side ascent is technically moderate in normal conditions but remains glaciated, high and exposed to severe weather.

Vinson Massif

4,892 m · Antarctica

Polar expedition mountaineering. Standard expeditions combine remote glacier travel, fixed-line sections and prolonged exposure to polar cold.

Aoraki / Mount Cook

3,724 m · Oceania

Technical alpine climbing. Normal-route choices change with glacier and snow conditions and involve serious alpine climbing, steep snow or ice and crevassed glaciers.

Why the collection does not rank difficulty

The Seven Summits span very different environments. Kilimanjaro’s common routes are high-altitude treks, while Denali requires expedition-style glacier travel in severe cold. Everest adds extreme altitude and major expedition logistics. Vinson combines moderate technical climbing with polar remoteness. Aoraki / Mount Cook is much lower but technically serious. A single difficulty score would hide the distinctions that matter most.

Use the comparison tool instead of a league table

The comparison engine separates elevation, prominence, glacier travel, activity classification, season and permit context. That allows a visitor to compare the mountains according to the question they actually have rather than treating every objective as a number on one scale.
