How Giant Mountains handles mountain data
Mountain numbers look simple until survey methods, route definitions, changing ice and local regulations make them disagree. This methodology explains what each field means and how conflicting information is handled.
Elevation
Elevation describes a summit’s height above a defined sea-level reference or geodetic datum. Giant Mountains records the measurement used by the chosen source rather than silently blending values from different datums. Snow- or ice-capped summits can change, and improved surveys can revise a long-standing figure.
Topographic prominence
Prominence measures how far a summit rises above the lowest contour that connects it to higher terrain. It is independent of route difficulty. When reliable prominence sources disagree, the site preserves the selected value and source rather than manufacturing an average.
Routes and difficulty
A mountain does not have one universal difficulty. Each profile identifies the context of a commonly used route and adds a broad activity classification such as high-altitude trekking, glacier mountaineering or technical alpine climbing. Local route grades remain route-specific and should not be compared as though every grading system were interchangeable.
Seasons
Season fields describe periods when climbs or treks are commonly organized. They are not forecasts and do not state that a route is safe throughout a month. Snow, glacier condition, monsoon patterns, heat, wind and local closures can shift the practical season from year to year.
Permits and regulations
Permit summaries describe the broad access context. Detailed pages should link to the responsible park, government department or expedition authority and record a verification date because access rules can change. A simple “yes” or “no” is avoided when requirements depend on altitude, route, overnight use or protected zones.
Source hierarchy
Government agencies, national parks, mapping and survey authorities, universities, scientific institutions and recognized mountaineering organizations receive priority. Secondary sources can add context when primary information is unavailable, but they should not overrule a stronger source without explanation.
Corrections
Mountain data can change and transcription errors are possible. Readers can report a specific data issue through the contact page. Corrections should identify the mountain, disputed field and a source that supports the proposed change.
