Mountain elevation: what the number means and why sources disagree
A summit elevation looks like a single fixed fact, but the number depends on the surveyed point, reference datum, measurement method and, on snow- or ice-capped summits, the surface being measured.
Elevation is height above a reference surface
Mountain elevation describes the vertical position of a summit relative to a defined reference surface. In everyday use that reference is often described as mean sea level, but modern surveying works with specific geodetic datums. The datum matters because two measurements can differ even when neither survey is necessarily wrong.
The U.S. Geological Survey explains that a GPS receiver and a topographic map can report different elevations because they may use different horizontal or vertical datums. That is why Giant Mountains records source context instead of silently treating every published figure as interchangeable.
Elevation is different from relief and prominence
A summit at 6,000 metres is not necessarily a 6,000-metre-tall physical object rising from its immediate base. Local relief describes the vertical difference between nearby low terrain and the summit. Topographic prominence measures the summit’s independence from higher terrain. These concepts answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.
Why old and new surveys can produce different figures
Historical peak elevations were often derived from field triangulation or photogrammetric methods. USGS notes that historical U.S. peak spot elevations commonly had accuracy on the rough order of plus or minus 10 feet, though the actual uncertainty depended on method, terrain and map age. Modern professional GNSS surveys can achieve much higher precision when the summit can be occupied and the reference system is handled correctly.
New measurements can also identify a different highest point. On broad summit plateaus or ice caps, the highest surface may shift. Snow accumulation and ice loss can change the elevation of an ice-covered summit even when the underlying rock has not changed.
Why GPS elevation is not automatically authoritative
A consumer GPS reading is useful for navigation, but a single displayed altitude does not automatically override a surveyed summit value. Receiver accuracy, satellite geometry, geoid models, ellipsoid-versus-orthometric height and the selected datum all affect the displayed number. For a reference site, the source and measurement framework matter as much as the apparent precision.
How Giant Mountains chooses an elevation
The site prefers a current national mapping or geodetic authority, official park or survey publication, or a well-documented modern survey. When reliable sources disagree, the profile should identify the adopted value and explain the disagreement where it materially affects the page. Decimal places are not added merely to make a figure look precise.
