Ama Dablam is one of the most distinctive mountains of Nepal’s Khumbu region. Its long ridges frame a hanging glacier whose shape inspired the mountain’s name, often translated in relation to a mother and a traditional pendant. Though far lower than the nearby 8,000-metre peaks, its steep architecture gives it a strong technical identity.
The southwest ridge is the classic route. Climbers move through exposed rock and mixed terrain before reaching steep snow and ice higher on the mountain. Camps occupy narrow and sometimes dramatic positions on the ridge. Ama Dablam is a clear example of a lower Himalayan summit whose technical climbing can exceed that of some much higher trekking or expedition objectives.
