Mountain overview

Longs Peak is the highest mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park and one of Colorado's best-known alpine objectives. Its east face presents a dramatic sheer wall, while the popular Keyhole Route approaches from the north and west through a sequence of exposed ledges, troughs and slabs.

The route is often underestimated because it begins on a maintained trail. Above the Keyhole, exposure and scrambling become central, and the mountain can hold snow or ice well into summer. Afternoon thunderstorms are a serious concern on the exposed upper route. Longs Peak therefore sits between ordinary hiking and technical climbing, making it a good example of why activity classifications need room for scrambling and route-specific context.
