Mountain overview

Cayambe is a massive glaciated volcano northeast of Quito and one of Ecuador's highest peaks. Its southern flank crosses the equator, making it the only major snow-covered mountain through which the equatorial line passes. The volcano's broad upper slopes support extensive ice compared with many tropical peaks, although glacier retreat continues to alter route conditions.

The normal ascent is a classic high-altitude glacier climb. Teams generally acclimatize on lower Ecuadorian volcanoes before moving to Cayambe, then start the summit attempt at night to take advantage of firmer snow. Crevasses, changing ice geometry and whiteout navigation make the route more serious than the mountain's smooth profile suggests.
