Huascarán is Peru’s highest mountain and the highest summit in the tropical Andes. The massif rises above the Callejón de Huaylas and contains two principal summits, with Huascarán Sur the higher. Its glaciers form part of the Cordillera Blanca, a range where tropical ice has been retreating rapidly and where route conditions can change materially over relatively short periods.
The standard expedition crosses complex glaciated terrain and cannot be reduced to a fixed line on a permanent map.
