Mount Giluwe is the highest volcano in Papua New Guinea and one of the highest volcanic summits in Oceania. It has a broad eroded volcanic form rather than a single perfect cone and rises above extensive highland grasslands. The mountain’s isolation and wet equatorial climate make the approach very different from the dry volcanic trekking found on peaks such as Ojos del Salado.
Climbing Giluwe is primarily a trekking challenge, but the terrain can be saturated, muddy and difficult to navigate.
