Mountain overview

Mount Kosciuszko is the highest point on the Australian mainland and stands in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. Its rounded alpine terrain is very different from the steep relief associated with many continental high points. The summit is reached by maintained walking routes in summer, and the surrounding landscape contains alpine grasslands, wetlands and ecosystems adapted to Australia’s limited high-country environment.

Kosciuszko is included in the Bass version of the Seven Summits, while the Messner version uses Puncak Jaya as the high point of the broader Australasian continental region. That distinction is geographical rather than a dispute about the mountain’s measured elevation. Winter snow can make travel more demanding, but in normal summer conditions the standard summit journey is a walk, which makes Kosciuszko an extreme contrast with technical continental high points such as Puncak Jaya and Vinson.
