Yushan is the highest mountain in Taiwan and one of the most prominent island summits in the world. It rises near the centre of Taiwan within a densely folded mountain system created by the collision of tectonic plates. Deep valleys and sharp ridges give the range substantial local relief, while subtropical forests transition to cool coniferous and alpine vegetation with height.
The normal ascent is usually a two-day high mountain hike using Paiyun Lodge, although permit availability and weather strongly influence planning. The summit trail itself is not normally technical in dry conditions, but the rapid elevation gain from Taiwan's lowlands makes acclimatization relevant. Typhoons, earthquakes, snow and park closures can all interrupt access, so static route descriptions require current official checks.
Yushan belongs to the Yushan Range and is associated with Taiwan. The summit reaches 3,952 metres above the adopted sea-level reference. Its prominence of 3,952 metres measures the vertical drop that separates the summit from higher terrain.

The standard route uses maintained mountain trails and a high hut before the summit. The final section is steeper and more exposed, with winter snow materially increasing difficulty.

These months describe common planning windows rather than guaranteed conditions. Seasonal patterns can shift, and individual days can differ sharply from the long-term norm. Check current weather, snowpack, volcanic status where relevant, park notices and route conditions close to the date of travel.
Yushan National Park uses permit and lodging systems for popular routes. Current application windows, trail closures and weather restrictions should be checked officially.
Access rules can distinguish between day visits, overnight stays, trekking, technical climbing, protected zones, local guide requirements and expedition permits. A historical guidebook or an old trip report can therefore be useful for route context while still being unsuitable as the final source for current entry rules.
