Mount Cameroon is an active stratovolcano near the Gulf of Guinea and one of Africa's most prominent mountains. Its summit rises from a humid coastal region to more than 4,000 metres, creating an unusually large vertical transition through tropical forest, montane vegetation and stark volcanic terrain. The mountain belongs to the Cameroon Volcanic Line, a chain of volcanic centres extending through western Cameroon and offshore islands.
The standard ascent is a demanding hike rather than an alpine climb. Its difficulty comes from sustained elevation gain, heat and humidity lower down, exposure higher on the mountain and rapidly changing weather. Volcanic activity adds another dimension that conventional trekking descriptions can understate. Current local conditions and official access advice should therefore take priority over static route summaries.
