Mountain overview

Mount Meru is a large stratovolcano west of Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. A major sector collapse opened the mountain's eastern side and left a dramatic horseshoe-shaped crater with a central ash cone. At 4,566 metres, Meru is substantially lower than Kilimanjaro but remains one of Africa's highest peaks and has enough altitude to require sensible acclimatization.

The normal route passes from forest and open grassland into heath and volcanic terrain before a pre-dawn summit attempt along the crater rim. Wildlife considerations shape the lower approach because the route lies within Arusha National Park. Higher up, exposure and rough volcanic ground distinguish the climb from a simple trail hike. Meru is frequently used before Kilimanjaro because its multi-day profile provides useful altitude exposure, but it remains a significant mountain in its own right.
