Mauna Loa is one of the largest active volcanoes on Earth by volume and area. Its broad shield shape covers much of the Island of Hawaii and rises gently compared with the steep cones of stratovolcanoes such as Fuji or Rainier. The summit region contains a large caldera and high barren lava fields that create an environment far removed from the island’s coastal vegetation.
Backcountry routes are unusually long and exposed. Hikers must carry substantial water, navigate across repetitive lava terrain and manage altitude after starting far below the summit.
